This year’s Forum participants listened to and discussed 6 technical presentations detailing different ITS projects deployed in the western states area.

Here’s Ian Turnbull from Caltrans District 2 introducing his co-presentation with Ken Beals on Passive Repeaters. District 2, along with the Caltrans Division of Research and Innovation and the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University team up to facilitate the Forum.

Here’s Ken showing the RF links in relation to the Passive Repeater. Look close on the right side and you’ll see Leann Koon and her husband, Jon. Leann puts together the Forum and does a great job! We all appreciate her hard work. Thanks also to Jon for attending and helping several years in a row.

Kelvin Bateman (left) and Dan Richter (right) from the Western Transportation Institute included a demonstration in their presentation on the Automated Safety Warning Controller System. Ken Beals put together the components for the demo, other than the controller itself. You’ll see a simulated “Icy Curve” warning on the screen:

We filled the room with our U-shaped desk arrangement to facilitate discussion. There were no empty seats!

Ted Bailey from Washington State DOT introduced Yegor Malinovskiy from the University of Washington. The devices on the chairs are Bluetooth sensors used to collect travel time information. To make his presentation even more relevant, Yegor collected data along I-5 near Yreka during the Forum and included the data in his presentation!
